The Reso has been written as a stimulus text for PSHE and Citizenship at Key Stages 2,3 and 4. The tales that make up the Reso have been tried and tested in classrooms and have formed the basis for discussion, role play and drama.

This website contains tagging documents for the use of teachers interested in using the text as part of Key Stage 2,3 or 4 learning activities in Citizenship or PSHE.

Tagging 'The Reso' to the National Curriculum for Citizenship & PSHE at KS2,KS3 and KS4

A mapping exercise has been carried out against the NC statements to support the use of The Reso as a tool for the delivery of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 and 3 for Citizenship and PSHE.

In each case, appropriate chapters are highlighted to show where they can be used as stimulus material to provoke discussion and related activities around the theme.

The list is not exhaustive and we would like to hear from teachers who have found other uses for the chapters to deliver learning objectives in these and other subject areas.

The mapping exercises have been designed to open as WORD documents which you are welcome to download and use as printed material or store in teacher accessible parts of the school learning platform or intranet.

A major motivation for the writing of the Reso was Ambrose Conway's experience of the reading habits of pupils at secondary school. Over twenty years, Ambrose saw pupils become divorced from reading and the world of magination and creativity accessible through a good book. Whereas he noticed this sorry development across most of his pupils it was most pronounced in the case of boys.

The growth of Information Technology, whilst it has opened up some wonderful educational horizons, has also diminished the significance of the printed world, and, to some extent, the role of the imagination in developing empathy and sensibility.

Having grown up and been educated in Wales where the tradition of story telling seemed to be stronger in his youth, The Reso was compiled and successfully tested with pupils in schools over a number of years. The aim was to see if he could recapture the imagination of young readers with a tale which linked them historically to the time of their parents and grandparents as well as confronting them with issues that they faced in their daily lives; acceptance, drawing the line morally, bullying behaviour, law and order and "normality" and the tolerance of difference.

Recognising that literature must justify its place in the crowded curriculum, the Reso has been tagged as a stimulus material to the PSHE and Citizenship National Curriculum statements at Key Stage 2,3 and 4.

We hope young readers will enjoy the Reso on its own merits either as an individual or class reader. However, as busy teachers, we hope we have provided you with appropriate hooks to use the whole book, or individual chapters, as vibrant stimulus material to provoke discussion and creative response to key themes in the Citizenship and PSHE programmes of study.

The Reso can be ordered on line from Kings Hart Books at: http://www.kingshartbooks.co.uk/thereso.html
